About the Baobab
Established in 1994, The St Nicholas Nairobi Fund (UK Registered Charity No. 1068036) supports and cares for children in some of the poorest areas of Kenya. The project started in 2008 with 15 children in a small cowshed in a poor district near Nairobi. In 2011, the funds were raised to construct a purpose-built school, with three classrooms, a kitchen and an office where we educate 90 young children, aged 4-6.
All the children come from the poorest backgrounds – many have no immediate family at all. Many people in the local village have no education or jobs and live in one small hut without running water, sanitation and little or no regular food.
The teaching and care are of a high standard, such that our “Baobabs” are much sought after by the local Primary Schools.
At the Baobab the children also receive breakfast and a warm nutritious lunch, often their only meal of the day.
The aim of the Baobab Nursery School is to give the children the chance at an early age to have a life of hope and positive opportunity and to be able to make a meaningful contribution to the future prosperity of their families and country. It’s a dream which has come true for many of our children as the individual stories show.
