Story
For over 800 years St. Giles Church has been central to the lives of the people of Willenhall. Our current church building was rebuilt and consecrated in 1867.
Since 1867 the back drop to every Wedding, Funeral, Christening, Sunday Service and special event has been our beautiful Nave Stained glass window. Located to the east wall directly above the High Altar the window depicts the life, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The inscription at the base reads “In testimony of the large share borne by Mary Gough the rebuilding of this church. Her husband Ralph Dickinson Gough inserts this window AD 1867”.
To the right of this window is another beautiful stained glass window above the Altar in the Lady Chapel. This window depicts the Feast of the Annunciation (when Angel Gabriel ‘announced’ to Blessed Mary that she had been chosen for a special vocation). The dedication in the left corner reads “To the Glory of God and in loving remembrance of John & Mary Carver. Given by their Daughter Fanny A.D. 1933”
Unfortunately we don’t know which glass studios created these masterpieces but one conservator suggested the High Altar window appears to be in the style of Clayton & Bell studio.
In recent years the condition of both of these windows have significantly deteriorated. They both require conservation but the sad realisation for us as a church is that we can't meet this expenditure on own. We have set up this page to call on the generosity of the people of Willenhall and beyond for your support. We are hoping to raise awareness of our project because we know our church has cultural, historical and family significance for many generations and hope to secure its future for generations to come.
We look forward to updating you of our fund raising projects over the coming months. If anyone has any further information regarding the history of the windows or if you would like to know more about the project please contact Richard Harper at stgileswillenhall@outlook.com
