In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, children and youth with lower-limb disabilities face dire circumstances. Poverty prevents their families from affording essential treatments and equipment like braces, limiting their mobility and independence. Healthcare services are scarce and unaffordable, exacerbating their challenges. With little government support, they endure social exclusion, educational barriers, and unrealized potential. The high prevalence of lower-limb disabilities in DR Congo heightens the urgent need for accessible solutions and support.

By providing free mobility-enhancing treatment and equipment, US, UK, and Swiss-based charity, StandProud, improves the dignity and social integration of impoverished children and youth with motor disabilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). The organization focuses on assisting youth with disabilities aged 5 to 25 years old whose mobility can be enhanced by the use of leg braces that StandProud and ACDF craft themselves using locally-available materials.

How StandProud Helps?

StandProud provides leg braces (with corrective treatment rehabilitative services) at no cost to poor families with children disabled by polio or similar disabilities.

The organization promotes the integration of disabled children and youth by increasing their opportunities to obtain a normal education and participate in various cultural activities.

In severe cases, where deformities are significant, surgery is required. Beneficiaries stay at a StandProud rehabilitation home until they are comfortable with their equipment and ready to reintegrate into their communities.
