Steffi for Climbers Against Cancer

Grainau Trail · 14 June 2025
Last week, I joined Climbers Against Cancer (CAC), a non-profit organization that raises funds for cancer research while connecting the climbing community worldwide. Since its founding in 2013, CAC has donated over £600,000 (more than $750,000) to cancer research centers globally. Their work combines raising awareness and hope with real contributions to advancing cancer research.
Why Did I Join CAC?
“Climbers Against Cancer” brings together two of my biggest passions: climbing and the fight against cancer.
Cancer has fascinated and terrified me since I started studying biochemistry. While it was once often a death sentence, science has made incredible progress in developing effective therapies. However, many treatments still come with significant side effects, and there’s so much more to discover. How can we better understand cancer biology to find new targets for therapies? How can we use technology to develop innovative drugs? These questions have guided my academic and professional journey—from studying molecular oncology to working on drug discovery in a biotech startup.
At the same time, climbing has been an important part of my life. It’s not just a sport but also a way to challenge myself. It requires focus, planning, and adapting to unexpected situations—skills that I’ve found valuable in many areas of life.
My Challenge: The Grainau Trail
The Grainau Trail, part of the Zugspitz Ultratrail event, is a beginner-friendly race covering 16 km with 760 m of ascent and 810 m of descent, set against the stunning backdrop of Germany’s highest mountain. This will be my first trail running race, making it a special milestone for me. As I train for this event, I’m also raising funds and awareness for CAC’s mission.
