Story
I am running for Barnsley’s branch of Aphasia Support.
Aphasia impacts a person’s ability to speak, read, write and understand language after a brain injury, like a stroke. At least 350,000 people in the UK have aphasia.
Aphasia Support matches people with aphasia for 1-2-1 help to use a variety of computer programs on iPads and Android devices.
Further, Aphasia Support leads Aphasia Cafes where the people with aphasia regaining their confidence with communication and improving their wellbeing.
I live and work in Barnsley and met Rachel (pictured above) in 2020. She has aphasia from a brain injury because of an assault in 2012. It’s has been difficult to understand what Rachel is trying to say but aphasia doesn’t affect intelligence. Rachel just needs time and patience and to be treat with dignity and respect.
There’s coping mechanisms for communication like gestures, slowing down speech, listening attentively – and Rachel now is included in every group, decision and social activity, and communicates with everyone within each activity. Her speech has improved greatly and this has developed by been around people.
The money raised will support the work Aphasia Support do with people in the early days of Aphasia, and this is vital to a persons recovery and wellbeing!
