OVAID East Borneo Tour 2023 · 1 November 2023 to 12 November 2023 ·

Orangutan Veterinary Aid supplies essential medicines, equipment and veterinary expertise to orangutan rescue groups and rescue teams in Indonesia and Malaysian Borneo. The charity shares knowledge, educates and works to improve the welfare of this critically endangered species.

Story

Please help us to help our local environment AND benefit the Orangutans of Borneo, by sponsoring us for our 18-mile litter pick to raise money for Orangutan Veterinary Aid!

In November this year, Mary and I are going on an adventure of a lifetime, joining the charity Ovaid on an expedition to deliver much needed equipment to remote Orangutan veterinary facilities in Borneo. We're fully funding the trip ourselves, but we made a promise to Ovaid to raise £900 each to help their incredibly valuable work.

Mary's suggestion - why don't we do something that will benefit our wildlife, while we raise money to help the Bornean wildlife? Mary, I couldn't agree more! So over the next 3 weeks we will be walking 18 miles of the Ribble Valley countryside and beauty spots, clearing as much litter as we can carry / load into our cars. That's 1 mile for every £100 we need to raise. Every piece of litter will be disposed of properly - at a local waste facility - hopefully leaving our corner of the world a little safer, cleaner and more beautiful for the wildlife and humans that live there.

Every penny of the money raised on this page will go direct to the Ovaid charity. Please give as little or as much as you feel you can - we are grateful for every single penny and so are Ovaid :-)

We'll be updating with photos as we go, so keep watching this space!

Much love,

Mary & Steph

Do you want to know more about the charity? Keep reading or follow the link to Orangutan veterinary aid (Ovaid).

All three species of Orangutan are now on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with their populations continuing to decline significantly. Around 3000 of these primates are killed each year, with the current rate of loss meaning they face extinction in the wild within the next 50 years.

Never before has their very existence been threatened so severely. Economic crisis combined with natural disasters and human abuse of the forest are pushing one of humankind’s closest cousins to extinction.

The main threats in today to the survival of orangutans:

• Loss of habitat through deforestation

• Palm oil plantations

• Illegal hunting

• Illegal pet trade

Orangutan veterinary aid (Ovaid) is a zero salary, voluntary run charity dedicated to providing veterinary equipment, medicines and practical veterinary presence and assistance to orangutan rescue groups and centres in Indonesia and Malaysia.

By its actions the charity works to improve resources for rescued orangutan and to improve welfare.

The charity actively assists veterinarians working in the field of orangutan conservation through training programmes and the Ovaid Bronwyn Watson Scholarship.

The charity also aims to spread awareness of the negative effects of deforestation for the orangutan, countless other wildlife species and human populations.

Please donate to help Ovaid to provide this vital support to the veterinary teams working tirelessly to ensure the survival of Orangutans in the wild.
