Hello everyone,
As you all know, I’m a keen cyclist and whilst riding my last Ride Across Britain I came up with this crazy idea about the possibility of maybe walking it? I know, nuts eh? To cycle it took 9 days to do 1000 miles. This challenge will be much harder because the distance is longer (approximately 1200 miles) and the time it takes is much longer. I will be using National Trails, tracks and footpaths nearly all cross country. The walk should take me approximately 60 days not including some rest days.
I start the walk Tuesday 5th May at Lands End. I will make my way up the SW Coastal path into Devon, through Exmoor, Somerset, up towards Bath where I’ll pick up the Cotswold Way, Heart of England Way, the Pennine Way and then into Scotland. Then I shall make my way up to Glasgow, get on the West Highland Way, the Great Glen Way and finally from Inverness- the John o’Groats Trail.
I will be staying at a mixture campsites, wild camping and B & B’s.
Thankfully, my wife and son will be helping me with kit swaps and visits to keep me fresh and motivated!
The charity I’ve chosen is one very close to the heart and one I’ve raised money for several times. It’s Way Ahead Support Services, Leamington Spa. It’s a charity which supports vulnerable adults with learning difficulties.
This year is a special year for Way Ahead as they are celebrating their 60th year of supporting vulnerable adults in thr local area.
Way Ahead need a new mini bus for transporting individuals, some with disabilities. Currently some individuals are unable to be taken to day care services and trips out. A mini bus with a ramp for wheel chair access will make a massive difference. All money raised will go towards the funding of s new mini bus. As its Way Ahead's 60th year they would like to raise £60,000.
