There are about 118,000 young people aged 16 to 25 are homeless, that's one in 64 young people. When we say homeless, we're not just talking about sleeping rough on the streets. It's the teenager sofa surfing between friends' houses, never knowing where they'll be next week. It's someone spending nights on night buses because it's safer than the alternative. It's even young people finding strangers on Tinder just to have somewhere to sleep.
What makes youth homelessness particularly cruel is the circle of despair these young people get trapped in. It often starts with a sudden crisis - family breakdown, violence, or leaving care.
Suddenly, survival becomes their only priority. Finding somewhere to sleep or wash takes all their energy, so education and work fall away.
Without steady income or even a bank account, they can't afford housing. And landlords are reluctant to rent to young people on low incomes, even when they're trying to get back on track.
Each setback leads to another,….. trapping them in a loop that's incredibly hard to break. But here's the thing - it doesn't have to be this way.
That's where Centrepoint comes in.
Centrepoint is the UK's leading youth homelessness charity, and they do so much more than provide beds. They work with schools to identify 11- to 16-year-olds at hidden risk before they become homeless.
They provide education, training and employment support. They offer legal advice, mental health support, and most importantly, they help young people move into independent living for good.
Centrepoint breaks the cycle.
And we want to help Centrepoint break that cycle
This February 6th, we are putting together a Pimento members team to be part of the Centrepoint Sleep Out in London.
It’s an overnight challenge where we spend one night outside to raise awareness and vital funds.
Any help you can give would be wonderful.
David, Paddy and I will be sleeping out and you are most welcome to join us along with a few Pimento members too.
