Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 17th May I will be taking on the challenge of cycling approximately 2000km from Spain to Ireland to raise much needed funds for The Irish Cancer Society.
On the 1st March 2022 I lost my beautiful wife Dolores to pancreatic cancer.
Dolores was a beloved mother to Kyle and Niamh, a wonderful daughter, sister, aunty and friend. She was an incredibly kind, funny and strong woman who loved her family and friends to the moon and back again.
In September 2021, Dolores was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Almost 600 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Ireland every year. Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, and this was the case for Dolores. The cancer had already spread to her liver and lungs before being detected.
While faced with a devastating prognosis, Dolores still tried every treatment available to her, but nothing would slow the spread of the cancer. We were determined not to lose hope and in true Dolores form, she wanted to enjoy every moment she had with her family. We spent one last Christmas together at home which was full of joy, love and laughter.
In February 2022 Dolores was admitted to St Brigid's Hospice, Curragh where she was cared for by the wonderful staff. It was here that Dolores passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on 1st of March.
Dolores was passionate about helping others, so to honour her memory I will be fundraising for The Irish Cancer Society by cycling from the town of Dolores in Alicante, Spain to her hometown of Newbridge in Co. Kildare, Ireland.
I have always been a keen cyclist having raced and completed many sportives in my time, but this will be, by far, the longest distance I have ever ridden. I will be riding by myself and will be self supported, carrying all of my gear on the bike.
All proceeds raised will be donated to The Irish Cancer Society to support the work they do to save lives and improve the lives of people affected by cancer. Your support and any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Dolores was the light of our lives and she will live on in our memories forever.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
