Help Restore the Headstone of a Former Mayor of Salford

Steve OHara is raising money for Salford Children's Holiday Camp
In memory of Samuel Delves
Salford Children's Holiday Camp provides seaside holiday accommodation for up to 60 children and their carers. Meals are provided for all groups to ensure that our guests can make full use of their time on Camp. We also have two indoor games rooms, a large children's play area and lots of space for football, rounders or other games. Since the loss of Local Authority funding and support, the Management Committee has worked tirelessly to ensure that the Camp remains open for the next generation of children and young people to enjoy a visit to the seaside that they may not otherwise be able to access. Please donate to support our cause.

Story

Honouring the Mayor Who Helped Secure City Status for Salford — 100 Years On

This year marks 100 years since Salford was granted official city status — an important milestone in the city’s proud history.

My great great grandfather played a significant role in that achievement during his time as Mayor of Salford. Alongside his civic work, he also founded the Salford Children’s Holiday Club, helping provide opportunities and experiences for local children and working families at a time when such support meant so much.

Although his contribution to the city and its people is still remembered by some, sadly his grave and headstone at Weaste cemetery have deteriorated over the years.

As his family, we would love to restore his resting place so that his memory — and the part he played in Salford’s history — can be honoured properly during this centenary year.

We are raising funds to:

* Restore or replace the existing headstone

* Carry out any necessary grave restoration work

* Ensure the site is preserved respectfully for future generations

This is not only about remembering one individual, but about preserving a small piece of Salford’s civic and community history.

Any contribution, no matter the size, would mean a great deal to our family and would help us give him the dignity and recognition he deserves 100 years after helping shape the city we know today.

If you are unable to donate, sharing this page with others who care about Salford’s history and heritage would also be deeply appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for helping us honour his legacy.

After closure in early 2014 the camp reopened in April 2015, it had originally been opened in 1926 as a poor children’s camp so the less than privileged Salford children could have a holiday by the sea. Affectionately Known as the Jam Butty camp the ‘poor’ was eventually removed from the title.

It now offers holidays to school children, young carers, brownies, scouts, football teams and other groups as well as underprivileged children.

For 100 years, over 80,000 children have benefited from holidays and opportunities through our club.

We’re now raising £2,000 to help continue this support for future generations, with any additional funds going directly towards the holiday club.

If you can help by donating or sharing, we’d be incredibly grateful ❤️
