They say keeping up with little ones is a workout and now we’re putting that to the test! To support our fantastic nursery, we are taking on a 10k challenge!

​As first-time runners, this is a big leap for us, but we’re determined to go the extra mile for our workplace.

Stepping Stones Play and Learn Group is a small charity based in Colchester, Essex in an area which is recognised as an area of deprivation. Our main service is an integrated nursery for children with additional needs and mainstreamers aged 2 - 5 years to play, learn and develop alongside each other. We also run a weekly Tots Group and sensory group for 0–3-year-olds with special needs, and holiday Clubs for nursery age children. We are a registered charity and non-profit making.

The group formed in 1991 to give children with special needs the opportunity to play alongside their peers, and to give parents much needed respite care.  Parents wanted a group where their child was not the only one with special needs, and where staff had knowledge, skills and experience that enabled them to meet the individual needs of the children. We are a parent-led group and as parents have identified their own needs the group has grown to meet them. Parents are on our committee, and we take our lead from them.

We receive some statutory funding, but this covers only half the costs, so annually an additional £180k+ has to be fundraised which gets more difficult each year.

Current projects include:

- Installing heat/cooling air filter system to keep the nursery at a comfortable and consistent temperature all year round. This is especially important for children who find it difficult to regulate their body temperature.

- Updating the garden surface and outdoor equipment. The garden is used every day and plays a vital role in children’s learning, physical development and wellbeing.

- Upgrading the touchscreen to a new Smart TV to support learning through interactive activities, including children’s yoga, music, movement and dancing.

This totals around £46,000, so any support you would like to give us for our 10k run will be greatly appreciated.
