Story
The adventurous spirit ran strong in Steve, always seeking new challenges and pushing his limits. An expert climber, runner, and pretty much any sport he turned his hand at. Three years ago, while climbing sea cliffs in Wales, he experienced a serious accident after a part of the cliff collapsed and he fell over 20 feet onto a rock slab. Miraculously, Steve survived and was airlifted to safety, but the accident left him with a serious concussion. The initial aftermath was difficult; he permanently lost his sense of smell and endured months of debilitating dizzy spells.
The dizzy spells gradually subsided and Steve (being Steve) found the challenge of getting his taste and smell back as mother nature laying down the gauntlet. After lots of potions and habitual smell exercises using different salts, he did see signs of improvement, but they were fleeting, and he didn’t know whether he just imagined it.
Steve passed without fully recovering from those symptoms, so it feels fitting that we continue the challenge he faced by raising money for The Concussion Foundation. This effort in Steve’s memory will help fund crucial research and support initiatives aimed at understanding and mitigating the long-term effects of concussions.
While climbing with someone, you start to develop a deep bond and can read their body language in any situation to know how they are feeling and predict their behaviour. I definitely had this with Steve. He never liked having his photo taken. In this picture, he’s thinking “come on, just get a move on, I’m …. freezing”. Still makes me chuckle, most people would love the idea of a photo on a mountain peak with the Eiger in shot :) Miss you, mate.
