I'm taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon in October 2024 to raise money for the BHF, to help repay my debt to them after my heart attack in 2011 and for the continuing research they fund into treatment for heart conditions.

I was only 36 years old when I had a near total block of my left anterior descending artery and fortunately survived due to the quick actions of my wife and a nearby paramedic, who arrived within 2 minutes of the 999 call.

I had 2 stenting operations at Heath Hospital in Cardiff, spending several nights in critical cardiac care.

Post heart attack, I was referred to the British Heart Foundation rehabilitation team based in Caerphilly - they got me back on my feet, got me back in the gym and helped me with the mental health challenges that come from a brush with death at such a young age.

In the last 12 months, I have had some further struggles with my heart - I've had an investigatory angiogram, an electrophysiology study (and failed ablation) and a further angioplasty and stent. In February this year I'm having a cardiac MRI to investigate the need for an ICD. (implantable cardioversion defibrillator).

Every year since my initial heart attack, I've tried to raise money to support BHF research and support services - I would not be where I am today without the BHF.

The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. It's only thanks to support from people like us that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps so please give what you can to help me hit my target.
