Story
Hello everyone!
I am running the Worthing Half Marathon on 3rd May. Admittedly it is mainly for my own own enjoyment, but I also thought it would be a good opportunity to try to raise some money for a brilliant cause - Cure Cancer at UCL Cancer.
My dad, along with 33,000 people in the UK are currently living with a form of blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. Around 10 years ago this would have been a death sentence, but due to the amazing medical research and work by charities like Cure Cancer at UCL, new therapies have been developed to help manage this currently incurable cancer.
Thanks to the UCL, my dad received a stem cell transplant which, alongside a monthly injected novel therapy, has kept his cancer in remission for over 6 years. We are forever grateful to the UCL and all the doctors and researchers who have made this possible.
However, living with Myeloma is not easy. While treatments have improved massively over the last decade, a diagnosis means an ongoing battle with a cocktail of drugs which often causes a host of side effects such as diabetes, nerve damage, fatigue, increased infection risk, gastrointestinal issues and low blood counts. Some people also have comorbidities which make them incompatible for certain life saving treatments.
This cancer remains incurable and claims over 3200 lives each year in the UK alone, so the research must continue to help more people with Myeloma, and many other types of cancer, to live heathier, longer lives and ultimately eradicate this horrible disease for good.
