Running for Lars 💚

On 4th October, I’ll be taking on my biggest challenge yet – running a half marathon.

I’m not doing it for a personal best or to tick something off my bucket list. I’m doing it for my son, Lars.

When Lars was just a week old, our world changed forever when he was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease. Since then, our family has experienced more hospital visits, procedures and difficult days than we ever imagined. Lars spent years on dialysis before receiving the incredible gift of a kidney transplant in June 2023.

Although his transplant has given him a new lease of life, it isn’t a cure. He still requires lifelong medication, regular blood tests and frequent appointments with the amazing team at Southampton Children’s Hospital, especially the G4 renal unit.

The doctors, nurses and staff on G4 have been there for us every step of the way. They’ve cared for Lars with incredible skill, compassion and kindness, and they’ve supported our whole family through some of the toughest moments of our lives. We will never be able to thank them enough.

Kidney disease in children is something that often goes unnoticed. Many people don’t realise that children can need dialysis, transplants and lifelong medical care. By running this half marathon, I hope to raise not only money but also awareness for a condition that deserves so much more attention.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help Southampton Hospital continue providing outstanding care and support for children like Lars and their families.
