Highest Streetlight in England 2026

Martin McMillan is raising money for Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs

Highest Streetlight in England

We train and use mountain rescue search dogs to search for and rescue missing persons, predominantly in a mountainous environment, but also in other areas where our skills may be of benefit. All Lake District mountain rescue search dog handlers are also members of a mountain rescue team.

Story

We are a team of Cumberland Council street lighting electricians and lamp column installers. We spend our working days installing and maintaining street lights throughout the Cumberland district and wanted to do a challenge based around our jobs to support a local charity.

The Challenge (End of June/July 2026)

We aim to carry a 9 metre lamp column and lantern up Scafell Pike (the highest point in England) and when on the summit, temporarily erect the column and light it up by means of battery power as the extension cable would be far too long. This will be a great personal achievement and a great team building opportunity for the electrical apprentices involved. As Scafell Pike is 978 metres to the summit, then 978 metres back down, we have set our target at £1956, £1 for every metre walked, but any donation will be greatly appreciated.

The Charity

LAKE DISTRICT MOUNTAIN RESCUE SEARCH DOGS

A hugely important charity dedicated to training and deploying search dogs, predominantly in the mountains of the Lake District. It is important to know there are people and dogs in the mountain rescue teams there if we should ever need them. They are entirely voluntary and rely on the generosity of public donations, so any donation would be grateful.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our page and for your support.
