Story
Thora, Martha, Fergus, George & friends are all walking between October 18th-26th to raise awareness to the dreadful situation, which has continued to worsen in Darfur and other parts of Sudan. Nearly 25 million people face starvation, an unbelievable number -which has been ignored by most of the world. 12 millon displaced people, forced from their homes.
Thora & Martha Henderson and family and friends will be walking part of the Great Glen Way. Fergus & George Jackson (6 & 8 years old) and family and friends will be walking over 18 km in one day, in Wiltshire -an epic walk for little legs! Different groups of people are walking over 7 days across Scotland and England to represent the distances refugees have to travel without food or water to reach safety at the border.
Our family's connection with Sudan came from the children's great grandpa & grandpa. David Henderson, who grew up in Darfur. His love for the people of his country ran so deep, it rubbed off on all of us. As a result, we can not sit back and do nothing as the people of Sudan suffer so profoundly.
Please join us! Walk 1, 2, 5, 10 or 50 miles and be part of this movement to bring recognition and awareness to the suffering which is continuing unchecked in Sudan.
Just email Rosie on: info@wildrose-escapes.co.uk to join us from your part of the world and let us know how far you would like to walk.
"Since April 2023, Sudan has been locked in a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), two rival military factions whose struggle for power has plunged the country into a large-scale humanitarian crisis. Millions have been displaced, civilian infrastructure has been destroyed, and humanitarian access remains dangerously limited.
The armed conflict in Sudan seems to be one of the world's most forgotten civil wars." (Global Voices)
"The conflict in Sudan has become one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century, leaving millions of women, children and displaced families suffering from violence, food insecurity and the collapse of essential services.
As the war enters its third year, UN humanitarians warn that immediate action is essential."(UN News)
"The signs of a catastrophe are already there: famine, mass displacement, sexual violence and ethnic cleansing. Yet the world still looks away, as if Sudan does not qualify as a crisis that is worth acting on." (Genocide Watch)
"Sudan is bleeding in silence: A humanitarian crisis the world cannot ignore. Over 25 million people in Sudan now require humanitarian assistance."
Money raised will go to a charity which our family has supported since it started working in Darfur. "Kids for Kids", works with children and families in Darfur and is one of a handful of NGOs still working in the region.
Here is some of what they have said about the ongoing crisis in Sudan:
"Out of sight of the world children are living lives of inexcusable and unimaginable hardship. In the forgotten region of Darfur, conditions are bleak. The bitter conflict is ongoing. Violence is rife. Hospitals are barely functioning. Food is scarce. Mothers are struggling to feed their children.
There is no water, no electricity, no roads, little education – and no health care. Children live in huts made of straw, they sleep directly on the sand. Water is miles away across the desert, and this year they face starvation in the wake of the worst drought for years followed by devastating floods and conflict. Now it’s the ‘hungry months’ when in other years they have been able to use stored grain. This year there is little, if any, stored. Violence continues.
Children are hungry, thirsty and living in conditions that shouldn’t exist in the 21st Century. Children don’t deserve to be let down by the world. Right now reports of starvation in Darfur are heartbreaking. Children urgently need our help to survive."
