Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In 1994, my cousin Nigel suffered a significant brain haemorrhage and was left in a coma for several weeks. He was 23 and in his final year on his business degree. Unbeknown to Nigel, he had a congenital defect affecting the blood vessels in his brain. That fateful afternoon it appears that a game of table tennis had triggered a major brain bleed.

Some months later, after leaving the wonderful team at Hull Royal Infirmary, Nigel was admitted to Daniel Yorath House in Leeds for intensive rehabilitation, and then into assisted care in a support network of houses they operated. They did the most amazing job, physically and psychologically rebuilding Nige.

The Hadrians Wall walk is one of the last major challenges that Nigel did in his late teens with his close friend group. So it seemed fitting that my personal trek should follow Nige's route and funds raised from it be dedicated to Brainkind. They are the UK’s leading charity helping people to thrive after a brain injury. They provide innovative rehabilitation and ongoing support to ensure life after brain injury can be a life well lived.

Life remains tough for Nigel as his haemorrhage left him blind in one eye, and physically limited down one side of his body. Living in the Yorkshire Dales whilst beautiful suffers from a scarcity of resources to give Nigellas the full support needed. However, he remains stoic, positive and always wanting to help others where he can.

Any donation you can make would be very welcome. I can 100% assure you that it goes to a very worthy cause for the marvellous staff and facilities Brainkind operates. Thank you.
