South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge 2025 · 2 August 2025 ·

The Open Door (Taunton) is set up to meet the immediate needs of rough sleepers in Taunton. In the first instance we provide a warm welcome, a smile and a cuppa. We fill a vital gap in service provision within the town and provide two hot meals a day; breakfast and lunch; five days a week which may be the only hot healthy meals that rough sleepers have access to. We provide access to a clothing store and a laundry facility as well as hot showers so people can meet their personal hygiene needs. In addition to meeting the immediate subsistence needs of the rough sleepers, The Open Door provides essential tailored support for individuals, aimed at improving well-being and securing accommodation. We work in partnership with other local partners providing a base and acting as a hub for access to Somerset Council Housing Department; Somerset Drug and Alcohol Service; the Somerset Homeless and Rough Sleeper Nursing Service; Somerset Rough Sleeper Initiative Team; and MIND. Our work is underpinned by a team of three part-time staff; a team of 30 volunteers and 6 volunteer Trustees. We have an acute understanding of the needs of rough sleepers and have been providing services from our support centre in Taunton since 2007. Our work relies upon our dedicated volunteers who provide a friendly consistent face to our clients at a vulnerable time when some stability of contact with familiar people is greatly valued.

Story

I will be undertaking the Ultra Challenge this August. Having completed this challenge in the Himalayas I want to do something positive for other people. The Open Door Taunton helps so many people who, for a number of reasons have become vulnerable and need help. This could be any one of us. They desperately needs funds to help more people of all ages.
