Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page, and helping Suffolk Owl Sanctuary.
During one of our recent daily flying displays - central to our charity’s mission to educate schools and the public about birds of prey and the need for their care and conservation - our Lugger Falcon, Frankie, flew out of range. Despite immediate searching, we couldn’t pick up his transmitter signal, triggering a three-day search across Suffolk.
At dawn on Sunday 27th July, Head Trainer Harry finally picked up a signal and found Frankie 16 miles away after a member of the public reported a sighting. As soon as he saw Harry, Frankie flew straight to him—safe, well, and clearly ready to come home.
Along with all our flying display squad, Frankie is a key part of our educational team, inspiring thousands of children and visitors about raptor conservation. For instance, Frankie helps us raise awareness of the threats facing Lugger Falcons, a species now classed as Near Threatened.
To improve the safety of all our free-flight ambassadors, we urgently need to upgrade our outdated short-range equipment to a more modern GPS tracking system. This will allow us to monitor their exact location from far afield in real time.
A full kit of the Marshall GPS equipment required costs £2,685, and we’ve launched a JustGiving page to help us raise £2,000 toward it. Every donation - however small - will directly support the welfare of our birds and the future of our flying displays.
Above all, thank you for helping us keep these educational ambassadors safe and soaring.
