My mum was a wonderful, vivacious woman with a real zest for life. She lived for family, friends and her local community, always seeking out opportunities to improve the lives of others. She had the most caring, kind-hearted personality and a beautiful sense of humour - I can hear her infectious laughter now! Sadly, mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the age of 65 and over a period of 10 years we had to watch this cruel disease rob her of everything - her physicality, her cognitive functioning and memory and, most devastatingly, her personality. Over time, we lost mum many times as a little piece of her was lost forever. We watched her fear, her frustrations, her anger as we too struggled to cope with the effects of this disease. We lost mum forever on September 11th 2017. Mum's passing followed the deaths of her own parents to this awful disease and preceded that of her brother David and dear sister Betty. Her brother Peter is still suffering!! I walk this epic End to End trail with my friend Julie to honour my beautiful Mum, family members and everyone else who have, are and still may have to walk the Alzheimers journey. It is with Hope that any money raised will help find a cure for this cruel disease and in the meantime support those who are having to deal with its impacts to make their journey easier. Alzheimer's Society has this at their heart and this is why we walk for this tremendous charity.
