Story

Let me start with this; I am thankful that I no longer fear people knowing my truth.

Your donation directly supports the suicide attempt survivor group offered through Samaritans. Over ten years, this group has become a place for me to grow into a person I never expected to be and it’s absolutely incredible.

I have gained a public voice regarding my own struggles with suicide. The ability to be open and honest about topics that are seen as taboo has freed me from this idea of shame because of my past.

Now, I don’t have to hide. Now I get to be me. Now, I know I’m worthy and deserving of support and help. From being too scared to ask loved ones come with me on suicide prevention walks (AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk and Samaritans Walk for Hope) to having loved ones walk along side is a feat in itself.

Back in 2017, I was in the midsts of a suicidal crisis. The old me may have acted upon my state of mind and wound up hurting myself, but the newer version did not. Instead, I called my therapist and went through the process of hospitalization. Once in the hospital, I had to call a few people, but immediately I wanted to talk with Debbie, my friend, the group facilitator. I shared my experience with her, expressed some concerns, and was just glad to hear her voice at the end of the line. Without her support and the members’ support, I truly believe that day back in 2017 would have had a much different outcome.

The Walk for Hope in 2019 was my first for Samaritans. I was the girl with the “free hugs” sign at the finish line. Being able to share hugs or high fives with people gave me a sense of privilege and comfort. I was able to give back to the community that kept me afloat for so long.

Suicide can be scary. Reach out to the ones you love. If you think someone is suicidal, you will not put the idea in their head if you ask. Do not neglect yourself. Seek guidance if you need it to deal with any situation, especially suicidality with yourself or loved ones.

Donate if you can. Come to the walk and meet people with the biggest hearts. Share this link. Anything you can do to support the Samaritans Walk for Hope helps.

I’m really glad I’m here today to send out my own message of hope. If you know me at all, that in itself is a powerful statement.

Sincerely,

Susan

A life is lost to suicide every 11 minutes in the United States. Yet most Americans are unaware that suicide affects millions of people every year. Family Services’ Samaritans program works tirelessly to address this major public health concern and prevent suicide among youth and adults in your community. Won’t you join us in that effort?

On Saturday, October 18, Family Services will host its 9th annual Samaritans Walk for Hope to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. A major goal of this event is to show support for the families and friends of the more than 49,000 Americans who die by suicide and the 20 million people who suffer from depression each year.

Together, we can create a community of hope, healing, and resilience.
