Story
Running is a superpower. I learned that mostly in the last 10 years as I entered the marathon community, built new friendships, and became inspired by the resilience and joy that running can cultivate.
I also came to appreciate that the youth sports programs and coaches I had in my pre-teen and teenage years taught me critical life skills like how to work hard, work smart, and have fun at the same time. This is why I feel particularly strongly about Sustainable Jersey City's campaign to fund the formation of a youth track team in Jersey City this year.
The overall fundraising goal is $30,000 to cover a full year's budget for over 20 children aged 8 to 12. This funding will secure new track shoes, equipment bags, matching uniforms, compensate their coaches, and reserve a facility for practice. After attending an AAU meet at the Jersey City Armory two weeks ago and witnessing Coach Rex in action with these kids—several of whom stepped up to the start line for the first time among a crowd of over 800 other runners—was truly inspiring.
This team will absolutely change individual lives for the better. As we gear up for the JC Valentines Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K on February 9, 2025, I urge you to consider supporting this squad! Your contribution can make a significant difference in nurturing young talent and fostering resilience through running.
