Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Anyone who knows me, knows I like to waffle before getting to the point so here goes, settle down with a nice cuppa and listen to my reasons for doing this!!

1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and my dad is sadly one of those. My wonderful dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October 2019 and following a course of treatment, unfortunately they were unable to cure the cancer but thankfully it was manageable and something he’d have to live with without too much disruption to his life. Roll on a few years and in June 2024, we were told the cancer had spread. Thankfully with research, knowledge and the amazing consultant led care he is receiving, the cancer is being kept under control.

With a combination of scans, bloods, tablets and injections, he’s fighting this and remaining positive, even on his worse days.

Without the research & knowledge of this awful disease, things could be a lot worse.

So, I’ve chosen Prostate Cancer Research as my chosen charity to support for the Great North Run Half Marathon in September. I’m going alone to this one which is a challenge in itself but I’m also aiming for a sub 2 hours. Yep, never done it, my PB is currently at 02.05.55, but I’m gonna aim high. Positivity will get me through and dad is a massive believer that PMA (positive mental attitude) has helped his fight.

We all have to be pushed out of our comfort zone sometimes, some by choice and some by chance. These runs are by choice but the reason I’m supporting prostate cancer is more by chance.

No one wants to hear the word cancer, your whole world becomes shattered by one word. Prostate cancer is so common, but the fantastic work that prostate cancer UK does will continue to raise awareness and research new medicines to treat and cure this disease. Dad hasn’t been cured but with the right medication, he continues to live each day with strength and determination.

You’re an inspiration dad so I’m doing this for you. You’re out your comfort zone, so I’m going out of mine.

So that’s our story! Got there in the end! So if anyone is able to donate, however big or small, it would be greatly appreciated.

£5 - could pay for 25 pipette tips, which help scientists work with extreme accuracy when performing experiments

£10 - could pay for ten microscope slides, which are used by scientists to look at the effects of new treatments on tiny sections of prostate for signs of successful treatment

£20 - could pay for one hour of a researcher’s time, bringing us closer to beating prostate cancer

Oh and for every minute I’m over the 2 hour mark, I’ll put in an extra £10!
