Story
This June, I’m turning 40 — and instead of a party or a spa weekend, I’ve decided to cycle from London to Paris. Yes, really. On a real bike. Outside.
I’m doing it for UNIQUE, an incredible charity that supports families of children with rare chromosome disorders — including my colleague Geoffrey’s family. His son Beau lives with one of these conditions, and Geoffrey has led this ride for the last three years. I figured it was time I stopped just cheering from the sidelines and joined the team.
This is a huge challenge for me. When I was 10, I failed my cycling proficiency test. It was… not a proud moment but that’s another story. So, this ride is for my 10-year-old self — and for all the families who are thrown into a world they never expected when their child is diagnosed with a disability. Their strength is the reason I’m doing this.
I’ve been doing spin classes for a year (dark room, loud music, no potholes – bliss), but I only got a real bike two months ago. I’ve since learned important things like how to signal without wobbling into traffic, and that padded shorts are not a luxury — they are a necessity. I’m excited. I’m terrified. My saddle and I are still in negotiations.
But seriously — this ride matters. Every mile is for the amazing families UNIQUE supports. If you can donate, please do. And if you can’t, just send snacks. Or good vibes. Or both.
