deafPLUS is a charity dedicated to enabling deaf, hard of hearing and visually impaired people to get the most out of life. We believe passionately that whatever our ability to hear or see we all have the same desire to communicate, stay safe and participate in society.

Story

Hey there! Thanks so much for checking out our JustGiving page!

We’ve decided to take on the 3 Peaks 24 Hour Challenge in support of an awesome charity called deafPLUS/visionPLUS, and to challenge ourselves in 2025 – Are we crazy? Maybe!

deafPLUS is a small but super important charity that helps vulnerable members of the deaf community, supporting them through isolation, anxiety, and day-to-day struggles.

This cause is really close to our hearts because both of us have family members who are deaf.

Suzie was inspired to become a BSL interpreter after staying with her uncle and experiencing the language barrier first hand. It took her 10 years, but she’s now a fully qualified BSL interpreter, and she wants to give back to the community that shaped her.

Rhys has fond memories of trips to Wales as a kid, spending time with his Auntie who’s deaf and his Uncle who’s hard of hearing. He remembers using basic sign language to ask for “more toast, please” and still uses fingerspelling to communicate with them today.

We’re taking on the challenge of hiking Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in the Lake District, and Snowdon in Wales, all within 24 hours, from 5pm on Saturday 31st May to 5pm on Sunday 1st June. We’re doing it with an amazing team of both deaf and hearing people, all coming together for this great cause!

Here are a few stats to think about:

800,000 people in the UK have a severe level of hearing loss

87,000 of those are BSL users

80% of deaf children attend mainstream schools without access to specialist deaf support

Most deaf kids leave school at 16 with the reading level of a 7-year-old

Deaf people are more likely to suffer from mental health issues compared to the general population

Many deaf people grow up with little to no access to language or education, making it harder to interact with the world and causing feelings of isolation. And with budget cuts, the demand for deafPLUS’s services is higher than ever.

deafPLUS helps by:

- Having a team of skilled deaf advisors, providing 1:1 support to clients with language deprivation around understanding important correspondence relating to topics such as Benefits, Housing, Unemployment, Debt and Independent Living.

- Providing educational workshops on varying subject matter to inform the deaf community about important topics, delivered in British sign language or with a BSL interpreter.

- Having a community hub to bring the deaf community together and overcome isolation.

deafPLUS' services are so vital, but they can’t keep it all going without support and donations from kind people like you!

Please consider donating to this fantastic cause! Every little bit helps! Thank you so much!
