Story
Six months ago, a life-changing spinal cord injury occurred when a fall from a ladder at home led to a daunting prognosis: it would be a miracle to walk again. Miraculously, just two months later, the impossible became reality as I walked out of the Regional Spinal Unit at Pindersfield Hospital. This achievement was made possible by the dedicated medical staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, family, community friends, and colleagues from various institutions who provided unwavering support.
The Regional Spinal Injury Unit at Pindersfield Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility with 34 beds that are fully occupied throughout the year. Many patients with spinal cord injuries face long-term challenges and may stay in the hospital for several months. Unfortunately, the NHS cannot provide all necessary resources for their care. This gap has led to the establishment of two vital charities: the Spinal Unit Rehabilitation Fund (SURF) and SPINE. These organizations play an essential role in supporting patients' long-term needs.
During my stay over the Christmas festive period, SURF brought joy by providing gifts and festive meals to all patients. Beyond inpatient care, both charities offer rehabilitation support after discharge by providing advice and essential equipment.
Through my involvement with The Desk & Chair Foundation (TDCF), I have raised funds for various charitable causes over several years. This time, I am proud to lead a team of 23 runners—including my three children—participating in the Leeds 10K event on June 15th, 2025. TDCF has previously raised funds to sustain schools in remote parts of Tanzania; this year’s fundraising efforts will directly benefit the Spinal Unit at Pindersfield Hospital that has been instrumental in my recovery.
I am immensely grateful for your support as we strive to raise £2,000for this important cause.
