Congenital heart disease is one of the biggest killers of infants. Every 2 hours a baby is born with a serious heart defect. Our specialist training means that now more than half of them are picked up during pregnancy. This is why Tiny Tickers exists; to give babies a better start in life.

Please read Opie's story below

When Opie was born, we had no idea of the challenges that lay ahead. He was later diagnosed with DiGeorge syndrome and Tetralogy of Fallot, a complex congenital heart condition made up of four separate heart defects: a hole between the lower chambers of the heart, a narrowed pulmonary valve, an incorrectly positioned aorta, and a thickened muscle on the right side of the heart.

At just nine weeks old, our world changed forever. Opie became seriously unwell and was rushed to A&E, where he suffered a cardiac arrest lasting four minutes shortly after arrival. After spending two days at The Grange Hospital and experiencing repeated blue spells, he was transferred to Bristol PICU, where he would spend the next two months fighting for his life.

During those two months, Opie endured two further cardiac arrests and underwent two BT shunt surgeries, followed by a full Tetralogy of Fallot repair. Remarkably, surgeons carried out this life-saving operation when Opie weighed just 4kg, despite the usual requirement being around 7kg. His strength and determination through it all were nothing short of incredible.

Since then, Opie’s journey has continued to be filled with challenges. He has spent much of his young life in and out of hospital, facing ongoing complications including severe reflux, choking episodes and gastrointestinal difficulties. He has been tube-fed since his heart surgeries and, at 17 months old, has only recently reached 7kg in weight.

Opie is currently awaiting fundoplication and gastrostomy surgery, which we hope will reduce the reflux and choking episodes that affect his daily life. These procedures should also allow him to receive nutrition through a PEG feeding system, helping him gain the weight and strength he needs.

Although Opie has already overcome more than most people face in a lifetime, his journey is far from over. As he grows, he will require further heart surgeries, including a valve replacement. Despite every obstacle placed in his path, Opie continues to show extraordinary courage, resilience and determination every single day.

Thank you for taking the time to read Opie’s story and for any support you can give. Every donation, share and message of encouragement means the world to our family and helps us continue supporting our brave little boy through the challenges that lie ahead.
