Skydive Day August 2024 · 3 August 2024 to 4 August 2024 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

I will be taking part in the Alzheimer's Society August Skydiving challenge on Saturday 3rd August 2024.

I will be jumping out of a plane at 12,000 feet! Am I crazy? Probably. I hate heights but I am pushing my limits in memory of a very special person and for a good cause.

As most of you will be aware, my beloved Bibi (Nan) passed away in January 2024 due to the advanced stage of dementia.

Bibi’s dementia was diagnosed at a late stage. As a family, it was difficult for us to watch her slowly deteriorate over the last few years without understanding as to why it was happening. By the time we had a diagnosis and started Bibi on medication, it was too late to slow the development of the disease.

Towards the final month of Bibi’s life, we struggled to get her the care she needed at home. Bibi hated hospitals, no matter how unwell she was, she wanted to be at home with her family. We were adamant to fulfil her wish and we did, but unfortunately we could not make her final weeks as comfortable for her as we had hoped.

It was very evident to us that Bibi was in distress so we approached our GP about palliative care at home. Our GP made three referrals, the first two were rejected, the third was accepted. The palliative care nurse came to visit Bibi on 16th January. On assessment, the nurse apologised to us as she could see that Bibi had needed palliative care much sooner. Bibi passed away 9 days later on 25th January.

Our disappointment in Bibi’s care sits with how difficult it was for us to access the support we needed to make sure she was as comfortable as possible at home. We wanted Bibi to know that she was not alone, that we were there, but she was in constant pain which meant we were unable to hold and comfort her.

No family should have to witness their loved one suffer this way, especially when there are services and medications to prevent this. This is why I have decided to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Alzheimer's Society offers a range of support services. From a listening ear on the phone to a visit in person and opportunities to connect with others. They are working towards ensuring that they can reach and support more people who have dementia, ensure diagnoses are made faster and making dementia the priority that it is by continually funding research into breakthrough treatments.

Dementia is the UK's biggest health and social care crisis. Let’s make the ultimate vow to ensure we can stop other families from facing the struggles we and so many others experience.

This one is for you Bibi x
