Talk 500 Miles (More)

James Martin is raising money for Movember

500 mile trek around the south and west of England and Wales · 11 October 2026

Movember has built a global men’s health movement, funding over 1,300 projects, changing the way health services reach and support men. Movember is taking on 3 of the biggest issues facing men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide. Movember is for everyone, not just for men.

Story

Last year, I set out on a mission to change the narrative around men’s health, especially mental health, suicide prevention and prostate cancer. I walked and talked 500 miles from Coulsdon to Stirling, raising nearly £6,500 for suicide prevention and prostate and testicular cancer awareness. More importantly, that journey sparked more than 300 face-to-face conversations about mental health and early detection. For this I was presented with the ‘Going the Distance’ Award by Movember for 2025.

And this October, I am doing it again, walking 500 miles more - I blame The Proclaimers!.

The Challenge: 500 Miles in 20 Days Starting 11th October 2026, I will be tackling another gruelling 500-mile trek in 20 days - a marathon a day - to continue raising vital funds and awareness. My goal is to exceed last year’s impact, talking to more people and raising more funds to support Movember, who have fought for the better health outcomes for men for nearly 25 years and who I have supported for 15 years, raising more than £35,000.

Why I’m doing this Throughout my struggles with my mental health, which have led me to the brink of suicide and 6 months hospitalisation, I have found that being outside, exercising and connecting with nature has been incredibly helpful and important to keeping me well. It is also proven that men men often find it easier to have meaningful conversations while doing an activity side-by-side, like hiking or walking, rather than face-to-face.
