Story

On 10th May I will be taking part in the Yr Wyddfa by Night Hike to raise money for Sands (stillbirth and neonatal death charity) in memory of our little boy Funk Ap Davies.

Those of you who know my husband Dilwyn and I will be aware of our painful journey. We went in for a routine antenatal check on Christmas Eve 2013, and our midwife couldn't find a heartbeat. I was 8 months pregnant, and we'd had a textbook pregnancy up until that point. Our world, and the future we'd planned, collapsed in a moment.

Our beautiful little boy was born on Boxing Day and our lives were changed forever. We never found out the cause of our loss, and support in West Wales following the event was pretty much non-existent. Research, prevention, and support are so desperately needed.

We were given a memory box at the time with prints of our son's hand and footprints, and a tiny glass angel that now sits on our Christmas tree every year. Nothing prepares you for the shock of loss, and these seemingly tiny gestures made at a time so utterly desperate that you can't think straight are now items so treasured.

Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, operates across the UK: supporting anyone affected by the death of a baby; working in partnership with health professionals to ensure that bereaved parents and families receive the best possible care; and promoting improvements in practice and funding research that could help to reduce the loss of babies’ lives. Their work is crucial.
