On Saturday 11 July 2026, a devastating moorland fire erupted at Dove Stone Reservoir in Saddleworth

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were quick to respond, aided by a water-dropping helicopter and specialist wildfire units. Thankfully, no human lives were lost, but the scars on this precious landscape run deep and will take many years to heal naturally.

As members of the RSPB Manchester Local Group, we were heartbroken to witness this tragedy unfold. Moorland habitats like Dove Stone are vital sanctuaries for wildlife and nature’s delicate balance.

This August, we are taking on the Greater Manchester Ringway Walk with a clear mission: to raise vital funds for the RSPB’s recovery efforts at Dove Stone and rebuild a home for nature.
