Story
Thank you for visiting my page.
I’m Sophie, 34 years old, married to Rich, and mum to our wonderful 22-month-old daughter, Lila. Our home is filled with her joy and the gentle company of Samson, our golden retriever who works with young people with Special Educational Needs.

In July 2025, our lives changed suddenly when I had a seizure out of nowhere. MRIs showed a mass on my brain. Within two weeks, I underwent life saving brain surgery with the incredible team at St George’s. I am very lucky that they were able to remove the majority of the tumour, as shown in the before and after MRI pictures below. Very sadly this was followed by the damning confirmation of an aggressive and incurable brain cancer diagnosis, a Grade 4 Astrocytoma. As of 2021, this is now recognised as biologically distinct from Glioblastomas (GBM).

I am now undergoing intensive treatment through the amazing Royal Marsden: a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, followed by a year of 12 cycles of chemotherapy.

The tumour sits on my language centre, for me this presents as expressive aphasia (I understand others but sometimes struggle to find the right words and sounds). After ten years as a speech and language therapist, I’m learning how much courage it takes to speak for myself and advocate, like the remarkable children and young people I’ve had the privilege of working alongside throughout my career.

A CURE CAN’T WAIT
➡️ Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children and young people under 40.
➡️ Just 12% of adults survive five years or more after a brain tumour diagnosis. And with more aggressive brain cancers this is significantly lower.
➡️ While cutting-edge advancements in treatments for brain tumours are showing early promise, research remains severely underfunded impacting the speed in which treatments are available to young people affected by brain tumours, like me.
WHY SUPPORT THE BRAIN TUMOUR CHARITY?
⭐ They fund innovative research, provide life-changing support, and work with Parliament to improve care and speed up breakthroughs.
⭐ They work with other cancer charities to champion all types of cancer. Recently, they supported the Rare Cancers Bill led by Scott Arthur MP, alongside the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce, Pancreatic Cancer UK, and Brain Tumour Research.
⭐ The Brain Tumour Charity has a global impact offering international support and funding for research across borders to accelerate breakthroughs everywhere.
