Blood Cancer UK Birthday Walk 2025 · 4 June 2025 ·

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

Our Charity of the Year partnership is with Blood Cancer UK in support of two very special projects:

Clinical Trial Support Service (CTSS)

Clinical trials are the only way we will find the cure for blood cancer. Across the duration of the partnership as a whole our service will directly support 500 people, with the nurse funded by Swiss Re responsible for 200 of those. Of those 200, we expect that approximately 140 will be referred for a clinical trial giving support and hope to the individuals and the blood cancer community as a whole who need us.

Matthew Wilson Multiple Myeloma Fund

Matthew's fund is searching for a cure for multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer which affects around 5000 people in the UK each year. For most people, myeloma responds well to initial treatment but unfortunately it almost always comes back.

Almost 6 in 10 (55.7%) people in England diagnosed with myeloma aged 15-54 survive their disease for ten years or more, compared with around 3 in 20 (14.4%) people diagnosed aged 75-99. Thanks to research funded by organisations like Swiss Re, myeloma survival has quadrupled in the last 50 years in the UK.

The Matthew Wilson Multiple Myeloma Fund was launched in September 2022 with a target of raising £5m by 2027. It has raised over £3m since it opened.

Through fundraising to invest in science and scientists Swiss Re is helping:

- to extend life expectancy following diagnosis and accelerate progress towards finding a cure for multiple myeloma by funding impactful and innovative research;

- to improve quality of life for people living with multiple myeloma; and

- to create a long-lasting legacy for the Fund, by directly investing in the careers of current and future research leaders in multiple myeloma research and clinical trials.

Thank you for your support, it is very much appreciated!
