Story

Following the success of its previous compilation projects, the Teenage Fanclub Fanclub returns with Tenuous Fanclub, a brand-new tribute album exploring the remarkable web of music connected to Teenage Fanclub.

As a cool alternative to revisiting Teenage Fanclub songs, Tenuous Fanclub looks beyond the band to celebrate the many side projects, collaborations, solo releases and musical connections involving its members over the years.

This thoughtfully curated collection features reinterpretations of songs by bands and artists who have, at some point, worked with or featured a Teenage Fanclub member. Adding a creative twist, contributors were free to choose any song from the connected artist’s catalogue, not necessarily one on which the Teenage Fanclub member appeared.

The collection covers songs by Snowgoose, Belle and Sebastian, BMX Bandits, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, The Soup Dragons, Jonny, The Pastels, Alvvays, Sweet Baboo, Nice Man and the Bad Boys, Frank Blake, Wor_kspace, Lightships, The New Mendicants, The Primary 5 and Big Star, alongside solo and collaborative work from Teenage Fanclub members.

Each track has been reimagined and recorded by individual artists and bands from the Teenage Fanclub Fanclub collective. Contributors span the UK and the Republic of Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Argentina, bringing together an international community united by a shared love of Teenage Fanclub and the music connected to them.

The result is an eclectic collection of interpretations that celebrates not only Teenage Fanclub’s enduring influence, but the rich musical world that has grown around the band.

The album has been expertly mastered by Mark Rolfe at Winnetka Records, bringing the diverse recordings together into one cohesive collection while allowing the personality of each contributor to shine through.

The album will be available exclusively on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to the charity Tiny Changes. Fans and supporters are encouraged to make donations via the project’s JustGiving page, helping to support a worthy cause while celebrating the music of Teenage Fanclub.

Mark Rolfe, Winnetkare Records

‘Once again, it is both an honour and a privilege to bring another volume of music by these extraordinary acts into the world. The love our community holds for Teenage Fanclub runs deep, and this latest collection, tracing the connections and following the threads that lead outwards into the wider musical worlds of our fab five, only serves to reaffirm that bond.

For me, Teenage Fanclub were a portal in the mid nineties, opening up new worlds and drawing me towards Big Star, 18 Wheeler, The BMX Bandits and so many others. They were never simply a band, but a gateway into a wider musical family, one whose branches have continued to grow and intertwine over the years.

The arrival of Dave McGowan and Euros Childs into the Teenage Fanclub fold over the past decade has only allowed that family tree to spread further, revealing new connections and bringing more wonderful music into its orbit.

I cannot wait to see where the next volume takes us, and which new threads we might discover along the way.’

Neil Macleod, Artist (Seahorse Migration)

‘I’ve been a fan of Teenage Fanclub since I found a copy of ‘The Concept’ in my brothers dingy student flat when I was 11 years old. I couldn’t believe that people in Scotland could make such a raucous, joyful racket. Fast forward 30 years and they are still a big part of my life. It’s been amazing discovering all the bands and artists the various members have been associated with outside of their Fanclub duties, whether it’s a full-blown side project, or just Norman tinkling away at the old glockenspiel on a single. The Teenage Fanclub Fanclub have again exceeded expectations with this collection of covers. I’m so pleased to be a part of such a welcoming and friendly group. I may be biased but I think the Fanclub have the best fans in the world.’

Gill Ross, Album Coordinator

‘Every once in a while, a band comes along and it’s love at first listen. I can even remember exactly where I was when I first heard Teenage Fanclub and I've never stopped listening. It’s been fascinating coordinating the album and discovering the musical connections people make from a love of the Fanclub, many of which I’m a huge fan of myself. Such a wealth of amazing music to choose from and once again, everyone has pulled it out the bag and delivered to a phenomenal standard.’
