Tesco’s Gerrards Cross fundraiser for Chalfont Dementia Support

Anabell Pelling is raising money for The Chalfont Wednesday Club Cafe
“Raising much-needed funds through the bookcase at Tesco Gerrards Cross to support Chalfont Dementia Support’s Wednesday Club Cafés.”
Our cafes welcome those living with dementia and their carers. Run by trained volunteers in dementia care, the cafes provide an invaluable opportunity for those in similar circumstances to meet. With enjoyable activities and friendly chat, the cafes provide a positive and supportive environment.

Story

At Tesco Gerrards Cross, a simple bookcase is making a meaningful difference. Donated books are being sold in-store, and over the coming months, all funds raised will go directly to support Chalfont Dementia Support and the Wednesday Club Cafés.

Right now, people in the local community are facing dementia feeling isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure where to turn—but they don’t have to face it alone.

The Wednesday Club Cafés provide a warm and welcoming space for people living with dementia, along with their families and carers. Held twice a month in Chalfont St Peter, these cafés bring together individuals from surrounding communities including Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St Giles, and Jordans.

At each session, visitors are offered tea, coffee, cake, and—most importantly—companionship, understanding, and a chance to connect. For many, these gatherings are a lifeline, helping to reduce the isolation that so often comes with dementia.

The cafés offer gentle, enjoyable activities such as jigsaws, painting, and quizzes. These moments of stimulation are carefully tailored to each individual, helping to maintain confidence, bring a sense of achievement, and support people to remain independent for as long as possible. Laughter and shared experiences are at the heart of every session.

For carers, the cafés provide vital support. Caring for someone with dementia can be emotionally and physically challenging, often bringing feelings of loss as relationships change over time. The Wednesday Club offers a safe space where carers can talk openly, share concerns, and receive guidance from trained advisers. Practical support is also available, including help with accessing benefits, planning ahead, and managing challenging behaviours.

The impact of dementia extends beyond the individual to the whole family. The cafés encourage family involvement wherever possible, recognising that spouses, children, and even grandchildren all play an important role in the journey. By offering support, advice, and connection, the group helps ensure that no one feels they are facing dementia alone.

For those living on their own, the loss of companionship can make everyday life increasingly difficult. The Wednesday Club Cafés help to restore that sense of connection, offering friendship, understanding, and moments of joy that make a real difference to emotional wellbeing.

With the support of donations and community initiatives like the Tesco bookcase, the Wednesday Club Cafés can continue to provide these essential gatherings—keeping people connected, supported, and engaged, while offering carers the strength and reassurance they need.

💛 Every contribution helps keep the cafés running, the community connected, and the support available to those who need it most.
