Story
My name is Gabrielle Dowling (Didi). I am an Australian who has lived and worked in Ulanbaatar for the last 30 years, founding and running the Lotus Children's Centre where more than 250 vulnerable children have found safety, education and care.
My quest is to ride my pushbike approximately 14,000km from London to Mongolia. I'll be crossing eighteen countries and three continents, as a pilgrimage and fundraiser for the Lotus Children's Centre.
When I first arrived in Mongolia, I planned simply to teach yoga and meditation. But I soon realised there were many kids living on the streets - abandoned, abused or orphaned. I couldn’t walk past their suffering - so I just got in and looked after them, and Lotus grew from there.
Lotus is not a typical orphanage. Children are cared for in small family-style homes each with a dedicated house mother, growing up as brothers and sisters, receiving emotional support and learning life skills in a nurturing environment. They attend local schools and remain connected with their own culture and identity, and are given opportunities for higher education and employment — helping them break the cycle of poverty to build independent, meaningful lives.
Fast forward to our 30-year Anniversary last year, I realised that securing Lotus’s future requires us to reach beyond our current circle of support. This Quest is my way of shining a light on the work of Lotus – expanding our community and strengthening our capacity to ensure these extraordinary young people continue to receive the care, education and opportunities they deserve.
We are so grateful for your support. Thank you for walking – and riding – alongside us.
With sincere gratitude,
Gabrielle Didi.
