Thea's fundraiser for Sam's Superheroes Foundation

Thea Bonham-Kelly is raising money for Sam's Superheroes Foundation
In memory of Sam Liew

Sam's Superheroes Scootathon 2026 · 19 September 2026

We are the UK’s only charity focused on improving outcomes for people affected by catastrophic epilepsies - NORSE and FIRES. They cause non-stop seizures in healthy children and adults that are difficult, and often impossible to stop. We fund vital research, raise awareness, and support families.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I first met Rachel Liew in February this year. Rachel is the founder of Sam's Superheroes Foundation, and she'd slid into my DMs after seeing some social media posts I'd created for another client. She asked if we could meet to talk about doing some work for her charity. I met her for coffee knowing only snippets of Sam's story, with a full diary and not much capacity for new clients; but within minutes of sitting down with Rachel, I knew I had to help and make it work somehow.

Rachel set up Sam's Superheroes Foundation in memory of her little boy, Sam, who died unexpectedly from a rare form of epilepsy called FIRES. Sam was a healthy, happy five-year-old who loved being on his scooter, was super bright, and had his whole life ahead of him. That was taken from Sam and his family when he began to experience relentless seizures, passing away just weeks later. Devastatingly, 1 in 5 people do not survive NORSE and FIRES.

Today, Sam's Superheroes Foundation raises awareness of these rare epilepsies, supports affected families with bespoke care packages; including access to a specialist Epilepsy Nurse and grief support; and fundraises so it can reach even more families. It's the only UK charity dedicated to NORSE and FIRES, and in a remarkably short time has achieved incredible things, including funding a £110k research study.

One of the charity's key events is the Scootathon. Two years ago, a team kick-scooted 55 miles from Birmingham to Mickleover over three days. This September, we're making the same journey; but this time in just two days. Rachel, myself and a small but mighty team are organising the scoot… and, as it turns out, scooting it too. I didn't realise that last part was in the job description. But here we are. If you've never tried kick-scooting as an adult, I can confirm it is INCREDIBLY humbling, whatever level of fitness or stamina you thought you had. The downhill bits are my favourite though.

Training is well underway, and you can follow our progress on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/samssuperheroesfoundation/?hl=en

and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/teamsamssuperheroes

There'll be plenty of fundraising events in the run-up to the scoot, and we're still looking for more scootees (you can have a go before signing up) and corporate sponsors. You can find full details and a sponsorship pack at www.samssuperheroes.co.uk

My personal target is to raise £300 as a scootee: every donation, big or small, goes directly towards supporting families facing the unimaginable. If you're able to give, thank you! And if you can't donate right now but this story has moved you, sharing my page makes a real difference too.

Thanks for reading, and wish us luck.... please pray for my back too (my mum is worried!).
