Story
As most of you will know, our family was affected by Anorexia Nervosa last year when Connie fell ill with the disease.
When Connie was at her most sick and in hospital, Alice offered to take her anywhere in the world - if she would only eat a bit of pasta. It was a pipe dream at that point. But Connie said then, that - one day - she would love to go to The Blue Lagoon in Iceland.
As luck would have it, Beat - the UK's eating disorder charity - announced at the beginning of this year that they were organising a sponsored hike across Iceland - finishing up with a dip in The Blue Lagoon.
Beat supports anyone with an eating disorder, their friends and family, as well as professionals working with or worried about an individual in their care. 1.25 million people in the UK have a diagnosed eating disorder. They affect people of all ages and backgrounds. A 2023 Times survey found that 1 in 5 older teenage girls will suffer from an eating disorder. In 17-19 year olds, over 5% of boys will also suffer from anorexia or bulimia. Eating disorders cost the UK's economy £16.8 billion each year.
Happily, Connie is now working towards her recovery and provided this continues, she and Alice will strap on their backpacks and hike across Iceland in March 2026 together - bidding good riddance to this disease that nearly broke them.
As a huge thank you to the people that work for Beat and in the research of all eating disorders, we want to raise as much money by having a bang-up party to celebrate life, our friends and family and finally being able to swim in that Lagoon.
