My Channel Swim: A Journey Fuelled by Family and Hope
Hello, I'm Theodore Forster, a 14-year-old from Bosley, and I'm embarking on the challenge of a lifetime: swimming the English Channel as part of a 6-person relay team. This isn't just a swim; it's a profound personal mission to raise vital funds for Mencap through Mencap Marvels, a charity that brings indispensable support to individuals with learning disabilities.
This cause resonates deeply within me because it's a reflection of my own loving, wonderfully chaotic family. Our home thrives with the vibrant tapestry of neurodiversity, and it’s a source of immense strength and inspiration. I navigate the world with ADHD and dyslexia, while my brother William faces autism and severe dyslexia. Our brother Elijah lives with severe learning disabilities and is nonverbal, and our youngest brother, Bronson, also has severe learning difficulties. Their journeys, and the unwavering love within our family, are the bedrock of my determination.
For the past two years, I've poured countless hours into training, relentlessly pushing my limits through every season. Swimming before and after school, late at night, and every weekend, I've embraced pools, designated lakes, the historic waters of Liverpool Docks and Salford Quays, and of course, the vast ocean. Every stroke has been under careful supervision, often guided by experienced Channel swimmers who have shared their invaluable wisdom.
My ambition is to raise every penny I possibly can for Mencap, with a heartfelt target of £2,000. Every single donation will be a beacon of hope for families like mine, enabling Mencap to continue their extraordinary work.
To even begin this incredible feat, my team and I each had to conquer a rigorous two-hour qualifier swim in waters below 15.5 degrees Celsius. Bound by the rules, wetsuits were strictly forbidden! Clad only in standard swimming trunks, a cap, and goggles – the very same attire I'll wear for the Channel crossing – I also had the memorable experience of encountering a few local jellyfish who, in their own unique way, left their mark. Surviving those stings was a small reminder of the resilience I've cultivated.
With the qualifier successfully behind me and those delightful jellyfish encounters now just a story, my official swim window opens the week commencing August 19th.
How You Can Become a Part of Our Journey:
As I prepare to push my body and mind to their absolute limits in the world’s busiest shipping lane, I do so with the profound knowledge that every effort helps Mencap continue their vital support for families just like mine.
I humbly ask for your support. Please consider donating whatever you can afford. Every single penny is not just a contribution; it's a powerful motivator that will sustain me through those "less warm," open waters (and hopefully, with fewer jellyfish this time!).
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible generosity and unwavering support.
Theodore
