Story
The Rhiwbina Dental team are running the Barry 10k on the 6th August to raise money for Faceup Cymru (the head, neck and oral cancer foundation). Faceup Cymru aim to provide support to patients who have head, neck or oral cancer. They understand that this diagnosis affects not only the people going through it but also their family and friends, so also put a lot of focus on ‘supporting the supporters’.
Rhiwbina Dental have chosen to support Faceup Cymru as Dr John Hawkins (founder of the original practice on Heol Y Deri) is a trustee of the charity and is a survivor himself. The practice was taken over in 1997 by Professor Nick Claydon who since has continuously supported Faceup Cymru with his dental team.
Head and neck cancer can be found in the lip, mouth, inside the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, and larynx. It is the sixth leading cancer by incidence worldwide, with 500,000 new cases a year and it is getting worse, with men and women of all ages at risk.
