Story
In September 2026, we are taking on the Edinburgh Mighty Stride Kiltwalk to raise vital funds for Prostate Scotland, a cause that is deeply personal to our family.
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October 2020, following a PSA test that Nikki “encouraged” me to request after Kev passed away from the disease in April 2018. I had no symptoms, and the diagnosis came as a complete shock. Thanks to early detection and the incredible work of Prostate Scotland, I was able to undergo the surgery I needed — a Robot Assisted Radical Prostatectomy — in January 2021, using specialist equipment the charity helped to fund.
The only reason my cancer was found was because Kev tragically lost his life to the same disease. Kev was my best friend, an amazing uncle to my boys and truly a part of our family. Despite receiving a devastating diagnosis, he chose to live life as brightly as possible even creating his own funeral playlist for me to sort out 😊. Taking on this challenge is one way of honouring his spirit and supporting others facing the same illness.
Prostate cancer is often called a silent disease because so many men experience no symptoms, yet:
• One man is diagnosed every 45 minutes
• More than 11,000 men in the UK die from it each year
• Early detection saves lives
This is why raising awareness — and funds — matters so much to us.
By taking part in the Edinburgh Kiltwalk, we want to help Prostate Scotland continue its essential work:
• funding life saving equipment
• improving early diagnosis
• supporting men and families throughout treatment
• advancing research into this often silent but devastating disease
This challenge is well outside our comfort zone (and Nikki’s feet have only just recovered from the 2023 Kiltwalk!), but we’re doing it with determination, purpose, and in honour of the people and stories that brought us here.
Any donation, big or small, will make a real difference — and we are truly grateful for your support.
Thank you,
The Shaws
