In memory of Finlay MacDonald

St Andrews to Edinburgh Run · 6 July 2025

Around since 1923, SAMH currently operates over 60 services in communities across Scotland. These services together with our national programme work in See Me, respectme, suicide prevention, sport and physical activity; inform our policy and campaign work to influence positive social change.

Story

Every day, two people die by suicide in Scotland. Tragically, last summer, my best mate, Finlay MacDonald, was one of them. His passing was a massive shock and left me questioning why such terrible things happen to the best of people. Finlay was an incredible person—so selfless, kind, and full of life. It made me realise just how important mental health is and how much more needs to be done to support it.

On 6th July, I’ll be running from St Andrews to Edinburgh (over two marathons) to raise money for SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) in his memory. In the summer of 2023, Finlay and I organised our own fundraiser together, so it feels only right to do one for him now and support such a vital cause.

The run will be from St Andrews (where Finlay went to university), to Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh (where Finlay and I were at school). The run will finish with a lap of the school’s cross-country course. Anyone who would like to support is welcome to join in at any point.

£15000 would allow for 12 schools in Edinburgh to be funded in the Mental Health and Wellbeing Peer Supporters Training Programme for Young People. Every £1200, allows for another school to be funded.

I’m incredibly grateful for any support, whether through a donation or simply coming along to run or cheer on the day.

Thank you so much for your generosity.
