Story

Hi everyone,

Myself and 3 Friends will be taking on a new challenge on 19th April.

Tom (me), James, Mark and Toby are all Fire Fighters in the London Fire Brigade and as a team we are planning to cycle from Bromley Fire station to Inverness Castle in Scotland starting on Sunday 19th of April and finishing on the 24th in Inverness.

The 6 day, 600 mile+ challenge will take us through central london, up and over the Peak District, Lake District and Scottish Highlands culminating in the Loch Ness Etape on Sunday 26th April, which is a road race covering one 66 mile lap of the mighty loch Ness.

We are doing this not only to test ourselves, but to also stand for something bigger...

Firefighters face risks that go well beyond the fires we attend. Increasingly, there is growing awareness around the prevalence of cancer within the fire service, a reality many of us have seen affect colleagues, friends, and the wider firefighting community.

This challenge is about, raising awareness, and doing what we can to make a difference, but it is also deeply personal to us as we will be riding in honour of our dear friend and colleague, George Cherry, a much-loved firefighter who dedicated 28 years of service to the London Fire Brigade who is now, like too many in our profession, facing his own battle with cancer (Grade 4 Glioblastoma).

George is part of three generations of London Fire Fighters and someone who embodies the very best of our service. He makes a lasting impression on everyone he meets with his outlook, humour and cheekiness.

After speaking with George's family, the decision was made that the fund raising should go to the Fire Fighters Charity as the work they do is so valuable to all Fire Fighters and their families, up and down the country.
