Story
I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 8. For over 25 years, I have witnessed remarkable advancements in technology, from large to small needles, insulin pens, and now an insulin pump to the end of finger prick testing with sensor technology. These innovations have empowered me in my daily life — whether commuting to work, navigating my workday, or embracing my recent role as a dad.
These technologies have not only boosted my confidence but also enabled me to run three marathons in the last three years while raising funds for diabetes. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can be diagnosed at any age, though it often appears in childhood or adolescence. In T1D, the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, making insulin — a vital hormone for converting food into energy. People living with type 1 diabetes must take insulin by injections or insulin pump to survive.
As I prepare for my fourth marathon—the TCS New York City Marathon on 2nd November 2025—I am excited to raise funds for Breakthrough T1D (formerly known as JDRF). This incredible organization supports research and advocacy efforts aimed at developing new therapies and treatments for Type 1 diabetes. My goal is to raise £2,500 to further this important cause.
Living with T1D requires constant vigilance and effort; it involves counting carbohydrates, measuring insulin intake, and managing unpredictable blood sugar levels every hour of every day —challenges that can be overwhelming. Research from Stanford University indicates that individuals with diabetes make an additional 180 health-related decisions daily compared to those without the condition. This reality fuels my determination to demonstrate that it is possible to lead a fit and healthy life despite living with a lifelong disease like diabetes.
I invite you to join me on this journey by supporting Breakthrough T1D. Your contribution will make a significant difference in advancing research and improving lives affected by this condition. Any donation is greatly appreciated as we work towards a future where living with Type 1 diabetes becomes easier for everyone. Thank you for your support and I will keep you updated on my training and progress leading up to the marathon.
