Story
My name is Roxane Andersen. I am a peatland scientist with the Environmental Research Institute, part of UHI North, West and Hebrides. I live in Caithness with my husband and two kids and we all love the outdoors.
I am also a Trustee of the Flow Country Partnership - the charity that is taking forward the management of the world's first and only peatland to have secured UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 26th 2024.
The Flow Country is the most extensive and intact blanket bog system in the world, blanketing the landscapes across the north of the Scottish mainland over nearly 4000 km2, of which the World Heritage Site covers approximately 1900km2.

On April 18th, it will be World Heritage Site Day - a day that serves as a reminder of our stewardship of irreplaceable sites and monuments around the world and a celebration of their extraordinary values. For this reason, I will attempt a 110km running traverse across part of the Flow Country, using and connecting existing footpaths, roads and tracks.
I plan to do it in a single push from west to east, meeting my family and some friends for support along the way. While I am an experienced ultra-runner, this will be my longest single run yet, and one that will push me to the limits.

With this run, I hope to raise awareness of the scale of the Flow Country, and raise funding to support the ongoing work of the Flow Country Partnership, including the management of the World Heritage Site.
For this reason, I have set the fundraising target at £19,000, which represents only £10 for each km2 inside the boundary.
You will be able to follow me on the day using this link.
A wee update...
From dawn to dawn, starting on the 18th at 7.30 AM and finishing 22h later just after 5.00 AM on the 19th, what an epic adventure. A few days later, the feeling that stick with me is gratitude - I am so grateful for the support of support runners Steven Andrews, Anna Grozelier and my husband Gearóíd Murphy who joined for various segments, and for Marjoleine Kopmeiners who walked a short section with me.

I am grateful for others who came to cheer me on and helped looked after the kids while I was out running or at my "aid stations" - Joyce Campbell you are a superstar!
I am grateful that I live in a place where such a great day out is possible through amazing landscapes where I could hear northern divers, curlews, lapwings, golden plovers, wood sandpipers and owls calling, and where in the same day, I had sun, rain, wind, frost and mist!

The run is over now but the work of the Flow Country Partnership continues, and our journey as the worlds first and only peatland World Heritage Site is only beginning... long may it continue!
