Story

I've set myself the challenge of running the Great North Run in September 2025 - an iconic event, and what will be my first ever road half marathon. Whilst I'm pretty active, running has never come naturally to me, and is an activity that often exacerbates endo pain for me. I'm determined to keep pushing, and want to be on that start line feeling strong.

In 2021, I underwent surgery which diagnosed Endometriosis, a condition I had little understanding of before I found out I actually had it. Decades of symptoms suddenly made sense, but I faced the reality of managing an incurable condition.

I'm extremely fortunate in that, by and large, my symptoms are relatively minor and I can enjoy daily life with minimal impact. But nevertheless, it's something I still have to endure.

In the last few months, my symptoms have got worse after a few years post-op being painfree. I'm now back on the cycle of tests, investigations, and invasive procedures, which are in themselves horrible to experience.

Endometriosis is the name given to the condition where cells similar to the ones in the lining of the womb (uterus) are found elsewhere in the body. It is a chronic and often debilitating condition that can cause painful periods, painful sex and pelvic pain outside of periods. It may also lead to infertility, fatigue and bowel and bladder problems.

When a condition affects 1 in 10 women and those assigned female at birth, it should be far more understood than this. As we sadly know, gynaecological issues are frequently ignored and overlooked, and women are left to suffer.

Endometriosis UK work tirelessly to support those effected by this horrible condition through national support groups, information provision, and a helpline. They also continue to campaign for change, fairer treatment, and hopefully one day finding a cure.

I was lucky to be treated quickly 4 years ago, but it takes on average 8 years for women to be diagnosed. This isn't good enough, and as I face a likely future of more treatments and surgeries, I want to take this chance to help Endometriosis UK continue their brilliant work.
