Story
Our home needs huge adaptations so that Tilly can have the basics—comfort, safety, and some independence. To transform her daily life, we need to build a bathroom/wet room, a suitable bedroom, and create level access to the garden.
One of the main challenges that Tilly faces is that the bathroom is not suitable at all, to the point where it is a struggle to wash just once a week, and has not had a shower at home for 6 years. She is also unable to enter or leave the house independently, which is not only extremely restrictive but also a serious safety concern.
With these adaptations, Tilly will have a bedroom designed for her large wheelchair, giving her the space to sleep and move around comfortably. Most importantly, she will be able to access the garden she loves so much.
This isn’t just a bathroom, bedroom and garden its dignity, autonomy and liberation.
Tilly's health began to decline in 2020. Since then Tilly has been diagnosed with Tourettes Syndrome, a working diagnosis of Functional Neurological Disorder and fixed dystonia But what does this mean in reality? Tilly now relies on the use of a wheelchair as she has been unable to use her legs for over 4 years, she has no use of the left hand which is fixed in a painful position, and limited use of her right hand. She has lost her swallow so feeds through a tube. At one point there were multiple seizures and tic attacks a day which meant that she was unable to continue I mainstream school and had to leave to join a specialist school.
Despite all of this Tilly has defied the odds and is doing an incredible job with her A-levels at college with huge ambitions, which is achievable with how determined and bright she is. Prior to 2020 Tilly was a keen musician and sailor but sadly she can no longer continue these interests. Her life has changed in so many ways. What was once easy is now a struggle.
A working home with the basics will support her day-to-day life but also allow a comfortable space for her to complete her college work and allow her creative, artistic side to thrive.
Though it's been a battle at times, we have secured some funding for the build through the Housing Executive. However, we still face a shortfall of £13,000.
As a lone parent who is currently unable to work due to caring commitments.I am hoping we can raise the remaining funds to give Tilly the quality of life that every child/young person deserves. We cannot express how grateful we are for every penny, this work is going to have such a huge impact, so thank you!
