Tim's fundraiser for Ballynahinch Counselling Service

Tim Bennett is raising money for Ballynahinch Counselling Service

21 Day Slieve Donard Challenge · 10 April 2025

Ballynahinch Counselling Service (BCS) is a free, caring, confidential and professional counselling service for those age 12 years and over. The charity was formed in October 2012 by a group of concerned members of the community as a result of the high number of suicides in the local area. Trained, professional counsellors are available to help with a range of issues including anxiety, stress, bereavement, mild depression, relationship problems, suicidal thoughts, health concerns, relationship issues etc. We cover the South Eastern Trust Area and work within Newry Mourne and Down. We are also in the process of setting up a telephone Listening Ear service which will compliment the counselling service in helping to reduce isolation for people in the Ballynahinch area. This service will be provided by trained volunteers.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am wanting to fundraise for three local charities; Ballynahinch Counselling Services, MYMY and, because this is taking place in the Mournes, the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT)

I am going to climb Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland’s tallest mountain, 21 times in a row, once each day from 10 April until 30 April.

Slieve Donard is a big part of most people's lives that live in the south Down area and beyond. I even built my house to have a view of Slieve Donard.

Climbing it ten times equates to climbing Mount Everest, so I want to do that twice over, to help local mental health services and to help mountain rescue efforts.

After recently undergoing counselling, I wanted to give back to help others going through the same thing.

They say it takes 21 days to change a habit or belief, so by undertaking this mammoth challenge I am wanting to do that but also hope to give back to those who helped me.

MMRT are amazing and the work they do is unreal risking their lives to help save people.

I am sure you all know someone that had to be rescued at some point. The point being you just don't know who that next person will be. Maybe you or someone close to you. Same goes for the help from these amazing charity counselling services.

These charities provide huge benefits to our community and without them, people would surely be lost and not found.

I was and still want to make people aware that if you are going through a difficult time in your life these counselling services are there to support our communities and truly are life savers in some cases.

We have been going through a lot of negative times what with Covid etc, and people do and will need these services.

The people that work in these types of service are amazing types of people.

You never know when you or one of your family members would need such a service.

So, I am asking the people of Down and further afield to think from a place of good and kindly donate as much as you can. What you put into life is what you get out of life.

In doing this you are supporting your community in only a good way. I wanted people to be aware if you go to a dark place at some point in your life, these services are there to help and it can change dark into light.

I had an idea on how much I would like to raise and it is £100,000 a C Goal, but I got to read that there are 4,250 stairs from sea level to the top of Slieve Donard, so I figured that I also have to come down too, so there are 8500 stairs each trip, and I am going to do it 21 times.

So, if I could raise one pound for every stair taken this would rise £178,500 and this would be a Bob's your uncle moment – just amazing.
