Tim's fundraiser for Southend Pier Museum Lift appeal

Tim Watts is raising money for Southend Pier Museum

London Marathon 2026 · 26 April 2026 · Start fundraising for this event

We aim to preserve the history of Southend Pier (the longest pleasure pier in the world) and provide visitors with information on why it was built, how it has changed, its important role during two world wars, how it has survived disasters and continued to provide pleasure for many generations.

Story

We need a lift!

Southend Pier Museum has increased its visitor numbers dramatically in recent times with over 15,000 people visiting us last year. However, that number does not include people using wheelchairs, those with limited mobility or with heavy buggies as they are unable to access the museum via the steep set of stairs that form our main entrance.

We believe heritage should be for all! Thus, we want to do something to allow access to a wider range of people. After exploring a range of options, the best way would be to install a lift. This is always a complex activity, especially in a listed building. Full funding will need to be via grants but to enable us to seek the necessary permissions and to give assurance to funders that we have thought things through, we need full architects plans to be drawn up. This appeal aims to help fund this stage.

We realise there are many worthy causes you could support but we believe everybody should be able to learn and enjoy their own heritage. Please support us if you can.
